Introduction: What is Talking Points?

Hey everyone! I've already introduced myself in the "About Me" section, but I'll do so here as well. My name is Justin Quilici, and I am a sophomore here at Kennesaw State University. My major is Journalism and Emerging Media with a minor in Political Science. My pronouns are he/him and I like to read, hike, play video games, as well as take photographs in my spare time.

The purpose of this blog is to explore the intersections between mass media and politics in reproducing ideology through propaganda. I was inspired to examine the roles ideology and hierarchy play in the media through the works of intersectional theorists such as bell hooks and Angela Davis. I will mainly focus on headlines and articles by various news outlets, but I will also spend time examining Tweets, videos, and other forms of mass media. I also plan to introduce the concept of "Manufacturing Consent" in my next blog post and explore real-life examples of how state and corporate interests collaborate with the media to downplay issues of class, race, gender, ableism, and other forms of oppression. I hope that you will join me as we explore the role of the media in ensuring the dominant ideas of society are the ideas of the ruling class.
